Bauer, Marius Alexander Jacques (1867-1932)

Marius Alexander Jacques Bauer (1867 – 1932) He was born in The Hague and studied painting at the Hague Academy, under van Witsen. He travelled often to the Middle East, where he made sketches for the etchings and lithographs that made him famous. He illustrated works by Flaubert and Villiers de l’Isle Adam, and decorated the margins of his copies of The Arabian Nights with countless drawings. He also painted Oriental scenes. He remained based in Amsterdam all his life, but his work was well known in England and France.
