Wells, Archibald (1874-?)
by Scholes, Robert
Archibald Wells (1874 – ) He was born in Glasgow but went to Australia as a child and studied art in Sydney. He returned to Britain at some point and settled at Rye in Sussex, exhibiting his work in London and elsewhere. In 1918 a critic reviewing a show of the New English Art Club had this to say about his work: “The picture by Mr. Archibald Wells has a pleasing callow freshness and promise. There is at least no doubt about the personal quality of its inspiration, which by comparison makes many more accomplished paintings seem dull.”
