He was born in Anstruther, Scotland, and studied art in Rome and in Paris with Lefebvre and Boulanger. He painted landscapes and portraits, moving to Canada as a child but living in Florence and London later in his life. In 1909 he became a founder of the Senefelder Club, which gave shows of lithography in London. He is usually thought of as a Canadian artist.
