by Scholes, Robert
Ellis Roberts He was born in Burslem, the second son of Thomas Roberts, pottery works manager of Longport, Burslem, and was educated at Ellison’s Grammar School there, and then apprenticed to Minton’s Pottery at Stoke upon Trent, as a china painter. He studied at Minton’s Art School 1874-82, where he was awarded a scholarship to the South Kensington Art Training School. From there he won a travelling scholarship to Italy for six months, which was followed by a stay in Paris, where he studied at the Atelier Julien. Back in England he had some success as a painter of flattering portraits. He lived in London. (We thank Dr. John Roberts for providing information on his great uncle.)
