Stanley Spencer (1891 – 1959) He was born in Cookham-on-Thames, in Berkshire, and studied art at the Maidenhead Technical Institute before starting at the Slade in 1908. His work was included in the second Post-Impressionist show in 1912. During WWI he served in both the medical corps and the infantry. He is best known for his murals, including religious scenes re-set in the modern world. At the Slade, he talked about his home village so much he was nicknamed “Cookham.” In later life he lived and painted there. A number of books have been devoted to his life and work.
