Vernon Hill (1887 – ) He was born in Halifax and apprenticed to a lithographer. In 1908 he was working under and published his first illustrations in 1909. He specialised in a sort of Art Nouveau Gothique. His best and most impressive work was the Arcadian Calendar for John Lane in 1909/10. In for December 16 1909 , Huntly Carter wrote of him: John Hassall The New Age (NA 6.7:163) Vernon Hill’s drawings are of great importance. They point to a new illustrator of enormous promise. His work is strong, imaginative, arresting in ideas, full of decided power and originality. It is destined to make a stir.
