Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) He is the most famous of Japanese artists in the west, though only a small number of his 30,000 artworks are known here. He was a restless, experimenting artist–a modernist before his time, and the early modernists noticed his work and learned from it. He represented the same mountain (Fujiama) many times.
