Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873) He was born in London, the son of the engraver John Landseer. Trained by his father to sketch animals from life, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when only 13 years old. He was known especially as a painter of dramatic scenes involving animals, and was a favorite painter of Queen Victoria. Naturally, the modernists found his work dreadfully sentimental and anecdotal. His brother and sisters were also artists, and his brother frequently made engravings of Edwin’s popular images.
