Biographies

David Farquharson (1840 – 1907) He was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire in 1840 and was largely a self-taught artist. He lived in Perthshire until 1872 when he moved to Edinburgh. He first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1868. Between 1877 and 1904, the artist showed a total of thirty-nine paintings at the Royal Academy in London. He moved to London in 1886 and lived there until 1894, after which he moved to Sennen Cove in Cornwall, making return visits to Scotland regularly. Farquharson painted the Scottish Highlands, moors, and rivers, and the lush pastures and river valleys of the Lowlands. However, the subject matter for his paintings was not limited to Scottish landscapes, he also travelled in Europe, painting the estuaries of Holland. In later life he also painted English landscapes.
