Samuel John Peploe (1871 – 1935) He was was born in Edinburgh. After leaving the Royal Scottish Academy, Peploe went to Paris with fellow artist Robert Brough where he studied at the Academie Julian and the Atelier Colarossi. He was one of the group of painters called (S J Peploe, , , and G L Hunter–all influenced by European post-impressionism). He had his first one man show at The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, in 1903 and another in 1909. The relationship was not, however, one of complete harmony, as Peploe complained of having the works of McTaggart and Wingate and returned from France to find his 1912 show cancelled on the grounds that it was too avant garde. And, speaking of avant garde, his granddaughter, Clare Peploe is is a film director, writer of screenplays, and the wife of Bernardo Bertolucci.
