Buffalmacco (1300?-1320?) by Scholes, Robert

Buffalmacco (1300 – 1320)

Buonamico di Cristofano was his name, but his perpetual jokes got him his nickname. Both Vasari and Boccaccio have described him to us as a practical joker. Vasari tells several anecdotes about Buffalmacco and his jokes in the Lives of the Artists. Buffalmacco worked, apparently, in various cities in the north of Italy, but no paintings can be definitely assigned to him. Nor does anyone know his exact dates of birth and death.
