Cooper, Thomas Sidney (1803-1902) by Scholes, Robert

Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803 – 1902)

Famous as a painter of cows, Cooper was born in Canterbury and earned a living as a coach and sign painter until his cows were noticed and his work as an artist appreciated. He studied briefly at the Royal Academy and exhibited his work throughout his long life. He returned to Canterbury and taught drawing there. He was so good at cows that he was sometimes asked to insert them in the work of other painters. He also did sheep.
