Eugène Delacroix (1798 – 1863) He was born in Charenton-St-Maurice, France, and died in Paris. In 1815 he became the pupil of the French painter Pierre-Narcisse Guerin and soon after was launched on an impressive career. His use of unblended colors anticipated and influenced the impressionists. He has been justly called the greatest of the French Romantic painters. His landscape work was influenced by , whom he admired, but his subjects are much more violent and powerful than those of the English painter, and he often worked with historical and mythological material.
