Filarete (Antonio Averulino) (1400 – 1469) Antonio Averulino named il Filarete, was born in Florence and probably died in Rome. He began his artistic life in Florence (probably in a studio of ), but his first period of activity as a sculptor was spent in Rome. Later he went to Florence where he was involved mainly in architectural projects, including the Duomo and the Ospedale Maggiore. He spent most of his working life in that city and composed there is massive treatise on archeticture, the , which ran to 25 volumes and developed the theme of the ideal city.
