Greco, El (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) (1541 – 1614) Born in Crete, he lived and worked mostly in Spain, where he was known as “The Greek” (El Greco). Known mainly for his portraits and paintings on religious themes, his elongated figures and twisted poses (in the style known as “mannerism”) have always had a powerful effect on viewers, anticipating the work of modern expressionist painters.
