Hollar, Wenceslaus (1607-1677) by Scholes, Robert

Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 – 1677) He was born in Prague in 1607, where he first studied under Matthaus Merian. Shortly after 1636, the touring Earl of Arundel encountered his work and employed Hollar as his topographical engraver. He spent most of his life from that point on in England. In addition to making many views of London, he made engravings based on the artworks in Arundel’s collection. Ezra Pound mentioned Hollar in a review of April 1918, as an artist who had “magnificent respect for his medium” . (NA 22.23:456)
