Konchalovsky, Pyotr Petrovich (1876-1956) by Scholes, Robert

He was born in Slaviansk, (Kharkov province) and studied at the studio of Raevska-Ivanova in Kharkov, the Stroganov Art and Technical Institute in Moscow (from 1889), the Académie Julian, Paris (1896-1897) under Laurence and Benjamin Constant, and the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1898-1907) under Tvorozhnikov, Savinsky and Kovalevsky. He became a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds Group (a Russian group of symbolist/fauve inspired artists) in 1910. In 1912-1914 he designed sets for operas. Living in Moscow, he taught at SVOMAS (Free Workshop) in 1918-1921, and the VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN (High State Art and Technical Workshops / High State Art Technical Institute) in 1926-1929.
