Henry A. Payne (1868 – 1940) He was born at King’s Heath, Birmingham and studied under Edward R. Taylor at the Birmingham School of Art. Loyal to his native city, he was an original member of the Birmingham Group and taught at the School of Art there for almost two decades. He was known as a painter of landscapes in watercolor, but also did fresco and stained glass work. He was made a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1920.In a review of work by the Watercolour Society, Ezra Pound (writing as B. H. Dias) accused Payne of imitating “mixed rather with the text-cards of the Bible Society” . Holman Hunt (NA 23.2:29)
