Nicolas Poussin (1594 – 1665) He was born to a poor family in a small village on the Seine river. His interest in art came late in his childhood and his struggle to get training was long and difficult. His real education began when he got to Rome in 1624. For the rest of his life he worked mainly in Rome, treating subjects from history and myghology in a calm, classical style that influenced many later painters.
