Edward J. Poynter (1836 – 1919) He was born in Paris, his father Ambrose Poynter being an architect and landscape painter. He studied under W. C. T. Dobson, afterwards at the Royal Academy Schools, and then returned to Paris, working under Charles Gleyre at the same time as , and . He became the Slade Professor at University College London from 1871 to 1875 and Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904. Alma Tadema Whistler Du Maurier
