Reni, Guido (1575-1642)
by Scholes, Robert
Guido Reni (1575 – 1642) He was born in Bologna and began to study painting at the age of nine, entering the Carracci Academy in 1595. His studies were rounded off by a trip to Rome in about 1600. After that he alternated between living in his native Bologna and visits to Rome. He was a very careful, elegant, academic painter, much admired in the eighteenth century, but a victim of the criticism of Ruskin in the nineteenth.
