Smet, Gustave de (1877-1943) by Scholes, Robert

de Smet, Gustave (1877 – 1943) and Leon (1881 – 1966) They were born in Ghent and studied at the Academia there under Delvin. When World War I started, Gustave went to Amsterdam and Leon went to London. Gustave’s work went from impressionism to expressionism after the war. Leon remained something of an impressionist.
