Tromp, Johann (Jan) Zoetelief (1872-1947)

Johann (Jan) Zoetelief Tromp (1872 – 1947) He was born in Batavia, Jakarta, and died in Breteuil-sur-Iton, France. He studied art in The Hague with Jansen, and then in the Rijksakademie at Amsterdam. He studied lithography under B. J. Blommers, and married Blommers’s daughter. He is considered a follower of The Hague School of landscape painters. He lived in various places in Holland but is most closely associated with the seaside town of Katwijk, where he painted many of his most admired works. After 1928 he relocated to France, where he died in 1947.
