Utagawa, Wakana by Scholes, Robert

Wakana Utagawa (1891-?) . She exhibited her paintings on silk at the Baillie Gallery in April 1911, and she illustrated a book on Japan by John Finnemore in that same year. In 1913 she visited New York, and the said this about her: NY Times It was when she was 6 years old that Miss Utagawa’s drawings first attracted attention. Withour finishing her hish school education she entered the Tokio Academy of Fine Arts, when whe was 14 years old and during her four years at the academy she was known as “the baby student.” The whole article (May 12, 1913) is worth reading for information about this artist’s training and values.
