Frederick Horsman Varley (1881 – 1969) He was born in Sheffield, England and studied at the Sheffield School of Art and Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, Belgium. He was an official “artist overseas” during World War I, painting battlefields and cemeteries. He was a member of the Group of Seven, a collection of Canadian artists founded in 1920.
