Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675) He was born and lived in the small Dutch city of Delft, painting a small number of works very carefully. He is known especially for interior scened, lighted from a window at the side, with a few figures in them. These quiet works have come to be among the most admired paintings in the world, and his quiet life, about which almost nothing is known, has begun to inspire novels and operas.
