Biographies

Cecile Walton (1891 – 1956) She was born in Glasgow but the family moved to London, where she began her art studies. She also studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, in Paris (at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and at La Palette), and in Florence. A painter, sculptor, and illustrator, she married her fellow Edinburgh student, Eric H. M. Robertson, and had two sons by him, but separated from him and lived with her friend, the painter Dorothy Johnston, for some time. Her most well-known painting, Romance, merges the two classic female images in art: the nude and the Madonna. In it she represents herself, holding her infant son, in a pose reminiscent of , with her older son looking on. Manet’s Olympia
