John Laviers Wheatley (1892 – 1955) He was born at Avergavenny and studied art under and , as well as at the Slade School from 1912 to 1913. He married the artist in 1912, joined the New English Art Club in 1917, and was an official war artist from 1918 to 1920. After the war he and his wife moved to South Africa, where he was Director of the National Gallery and a Professor at the University of Cape Town. He returned to England in 1937 and became Director of the City Art Galleries, Sheffield, and then Curator of the National Gallery of British Sports and Pastimes.
