Yates, Frederic (1854-1919) by Scholes, Robert

Frederic (1854 – 1919) and Mary (1891 – ) Yates They were father and daughter. Frederic was born in England, where, after an early career in business, he began painting at age 28, first traveling to America, then to Paris where he studied with Leon Bonnat. He later visited Italy, China and Japan. Returning to England, he settled in Rydal in the Lake District, where he became a founding member of the Lake Artists’ Society in 1904. His daughter Mary was born at Chislehurst in Kent and studied art with her father. She, too joined the Lake Artists and lived at Rydal in Westmorland.
