Ways of seeing the distribution of genre.

Genre Networks in The Masses

We can also identify among the Masses contributors the sub-networks of writers and artists who contributed the same kinds of material to the magazine. Immediately below is a gephi graph that links every Masses contributor to the genre(s) of texts that s/he contributed to the magazine: advertisements, articles, drama, fiction, images, letters, miscellaneous, and/or poetry. As with the contributor graphs on the previous page, the width of an edge (or link) in this graph indicates the relative size of an author’s or artist’s contribution, measured as the number of contributed items (rather than the page or word length of one’s overall contributions).

Contributors to eight genres in The Masses

Each of the next four graphs focuses on a different genre, depicting who contributed to that genre over the course of the magazine. If one or more volumes do not appear in a graph, it indicates that no texts of that genre were published in those volumes.
