Finally, we can also measure how the genre composition of the magazine changed over time. The first chart below shows the total number of words published in each of the magazine’s nine genre sections within each volume, and the next chart shows the average number of words for those genres in a typical issue from each volume.
The next two charts count the number of items published in six genres (excluding the non-item genres: ads, table of contents, and miscellaneous) across 7 volumes of The Masses, with the first chart showing the total number of genre items in each volume and the second chart showing the average number of genre items in a typical issue from each volume.
By dividing the data from the first chart on this page by the data from the third chart, the last chart below shows the average number of words per item for each of the six genres in each of the magazine’s seven volumes.
